St.
John's-Salisbury's spring mission trip to
Guatamala
St. John's-Salisbury sponsored
an adult mission trip to Antigua, Guatemala, through
Mission Discovery. During the March 23-29 trip, they
served La Escuela Integrada, a free school started by
missionaries from the United States.
The group held vacation Bible school and visited in the
children's homes, bearing gifts of care/food
products. They also helped rennovate a building that was
to be used to care for street children.
Good
Shepherd-Mt. Holly took part in Thrivent-Builds and became
video stars
In April, the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd-Mt
Holly sent a team of 15 church members to Biloxi, Miss.,
for a week of building houses with ThriventBuilds (cooperative
project between Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial
for Lutherans) helping those people recover from Hurricane
Katrina. An article with
photos appeared in the May issue of
ThriventBuilds, their online monthly
magazine.
That same week, Holy Comforter-Belmont, a town
about five miles south of Mt. Holly, also sent a
team. During that time, ThriventBuilds had a camera crew
there and took video footage and did some
interviews. Some of the footage was used to update a
20-minute video used for orientation of volunteers at the
Yankie Stadium facility in Biloxi run by Habitat and the
Salvation Army. ThriventBuilds updated the last
5-minutes of that video using some of the footage taken during
the week. From the video clips taken that week, they also
made a 5-minute video for use in retruiting new teams and team
leaders to go to Biloxi. They're in both
videos. View the 5-minute recruitment video

OPPORTUNITIES for
MINISTRY
Endorse this NC Council of Churches appeal for
justice for immigrants
Join other people of faith as they endorse this
call for justice for immigrants, which has been signed by NC
Synod Bishop Leonard H. Bolick.
In conclusion the statement reads: "We
recognize that immigration policy is complex and
multi-faceted, but we agree that all immigrants are made in
God's image and that our religious traditions demand that we
care especially for the stranger. We call on all people of
faith to stand with immigrants as a matter of religious
responsibility, to advocate for their well-being and
protection, and to educate our local communities about issues
affecting immigrant peoples.

Assembly
Saturday Highlights Video now posted on the
Synod Web site
Please check out the
wonderful video overview of Saturday happenings at synod
assembly. If you haven't seen the other assembly videos, you
have missed a treat. A special "thank you" to David
Carver, a professional videographer, member of
Grace-Hendersonville, and member of the NC Synod
Communications Committee. He volunteered his time and gifts
for this synod video ministry.
St. Mark-Claremont uses faith chests at
milestone moments
Wondering what to do with the faith
chest your congregation received at assembly? Use it as a
pattern and model for others. Picture here are St.
Mark-Claremont families receiving their faith chests at Holy
Baptism, a great milestone moment. The interim pastor is
Pr. Pierson Shaw. Where do you think the candles, certificates
and other mementos will be
going? |
RESOURCES
Idea for old
LBWs
An idea from e-mail this week: Contact
chaplains at jails or prisons; they may be happy to have old
worship books.
Resources for Bible
study and Bible storiesCheck out the new
blue box on the Heilig Resource
Center web page. You'll find a list of resources to help
with Bible study and Bible stories. Watch the VeggieTales
version of the story of Gideon or engage in a study of
selected Psalms. Call or e-mail the center today to preview
any of the resources listed or find out about the many other
options available. The Heilig
Resource Center is a ministry of the NC Synod, which
provides free-loan resources to congregations and leaders
across the synod. It is located in the synod office in
Salisbury. E-mail Catherine
Fink (cfink@nclutheran.org) or call 704-633-4861;

GRAMMAR TIPS
North Carolina,
N.C. or NC When abbreviating the
name of our state, North Carolina, in text, use N.C., except
when including an address. You would then use the postal
abbreviation NC. Proper grammar says that you should always
spell out the name in text and not use the abbreviation,
but in this "hurry-scurry world" we can't resist
abbreviating, especially in e-mail and online writing, use the
rule above. In formal letters, articles to be published and
documents, spell it out.
Examples: All N.C. residents should send their requests
to: NC Synod, 1988 Lutheran Synod Dr., Salisbury, NC
28144.
I just had to resend this and correct my "grammar goof"
enjoyed by so many of you. My number one grammar mistake is
using "there" instead of the possessive "their." I know better
but my fingers seem to only type "there." In proofing my eyes
don't seem to notice the difference and of course spell check
has no mercy. --Donna Prunkl

DID YOU KNOW?
The synod office staff
team sets aside a time for devotions every
Wednesday morning at 10:00 in the Herndon Chapel. They pray
for each other, congregations, rostered and lay leaders,
individuals and the varied needs of the synod, ELCA and
world. It's restorative and reminds the team that Christ
is at the center of all they do. You are welcome to send
prayer requests or to attend.
